The Science of Ayurveda

According to Bhava Prakash Nighantu, Yashtimadhu, Kalitak, and Madhuka are synonyms for Mulethi. In Ayurveda, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are considered the three pillars of the body, and any imbalance in these doshas can lead to disease. Yashtimadhu acts as a Vata and Pitta Shamak, meaning it helps pacify aggravated Vata and Pitta doshas. Acharya Charaka has included Yashtimadhu among the four Medhya Rasayanas and recommends taking Mulethi powder with milk for enhanced benefits.

Properties

Mulethi is Guru (heavy) and Snigdha (unctuous) in nature, with a Madhur (sweet) taste and Madhur post-digestive effect (Vipaka). It has a Sheeta (cooling) potency. Due to its Guru, Snigdha, and Madhur qualities, it pacifies Vata, and because of its Madhur and Sheeta nature, it reduces Pitta.

Natural Healing Properties

Yashtimadhu works as a Dahashamak (reduces burning sensation), Vedanasthapana (analgesic), and Shothhara (anti-inflammatory), making it effective in promoting wound healing.
